RESUMO

Augmented reality (AR) applications require displays with an extended color gamut to facilitate the presentation of increasingly immersive content. The waveguide (WG) display technology, which is typical AR demonstration method, is a critical constraint on the color gamut of AR systems because of the intrinsic properties of the holographic optical elements (HOEs) used in this technology. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a method of spatially modulated diffractive optics that can expand the color gamut of HOE-based WG displays. This approach involves spatial modulation using sub-pixelized HOEs, which enables the diffraction of red, green, and blue rays along identical directions. The proposed structure considers both the characteristics of the HOE and the wavelength sensitivity of the observer to optimize the color gamut. Consequently, an expanded color gamut was achieved. The results of the theoretical and experimental analyses substantiate the effectiveness and practicality of this method in enhancing the color gamut of HOE-based WG displays. Thus, the proposed method can facilitate the implementation of more immersive AR displays.

RESUMO

Practical application of lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxide cathodes has been hindered despite their high performance and low cost owing to high gas evolution accompanying capacity loss even in a conservative voltage window. Here, we control the surface structure and primary particle size of lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxide cathodes not only to enhance the electrochemical performance but also to reduce gas evolution. Sulfur-coated Fm3̅m/R3̅m double reduced surface layers and Mo doping dramatically reduce gas evolution, which entails the improvement of electrochemical performance. With the optimization, we prove that it is competitive enough to conventional high-nickel cathodes in the aspects of gas evolution as well as electrochemical performance in the conservative voltage window of 2.5-4.4 V. Our findings provide invaluable insights on the improvement of electrochemical performance and gas evolution properties in lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxide cathodes.

RESUMO

We have developed a new analytical peak separation analysis for superposed [Formula: see text]-ray peaks on [Formula: see text]Cu and [Formula: see text]Ga to measure the [Formula: see text]Zn(p,2p)[Formula: see text]Cu and [Formula: see text]Zn(p,2n)[Formula: see text]Ga reactions, unlike in most previous works that were employing a radiochemical separation to measure them. Based on the nuclear data such as the [Formula: see text]-ray intensity and the half-life for each nuclide, we may develop a new analytical method that enables us to estimate the respective counts arising from each nuclide, thereby obtaining the nuclear reactions. The newly developed analytical method can universally be applied to separate the superposed [Formula: see text]-ray spectra of any two nuclides, especially superior in separating the nuclides with different half-lives. In comparison with the data in the literature, the two reactions in the present work are in good agreement with those of some previous works. In addition, we compared the present [Formula: see text]Zn(p,2n)[Formula: see text]Ga reaction without the peak separation to the data in the literature without the chemical separation, and find that a good agreement is evident, enhancing the reliability of the [Formula: see text]Zn(p,x)[Formula: see text]Zn and [Formula: see text]Zn(p,3n)[Formula: see text]Ga reactions, which are further measured in the present work.

RESUMO

Water reclamation in spaceflight applications, such as those encountered on the International Space Station (ISS), requires complex engineering solutions to ensure maximum water recovery. Current vapor compression distillation (VCD) technologies are effective but produce highly concentrated brines and often cause scaling within a separation system. This work evaluates initial steps toward integrating pervaporation, a membrane separation process, as a brine management strategy for ISS wastewaters. Pervaporation performs separations driven by a chemical potential difference across the membrane created by either a sweep gas or a vacuum pull. Pervaporation membranes, as with most membrane processes, can be subject to scaling. Therefore, this work studies the anti-scaling properties of zwitterions (polymeric molecules with covalently tethered positive and negative ions) coated onto sulfonated pentablock terpolymer block polymer (Nexar) pervaporation membrane surfaces. We report a method for applying zwitterions to the surface of pervaporation membranes and the effect on performance parameters such as flux and scaling resistance. Membranes with zwitterions had up to 53% reduction in permeance but reduced scaling. The highest amount of scaling occurred in the samples exposed to calcium chloride, and uncoated membranes had weight percent increases as high as 1617 ± 241%, whereas zwitterion-coated membranes experienced only about 317 ± 87% weight increase in the presence of the same scalant.

RESUMO

Genetically engineered fusion polypeptides have been investigated to introduce unique bio-functionality and improve some therapeutic activity for anti-angiogenesis. We report herein that stimuli-responsive, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (VEGFR1) targeting fusion polypeptides composed of a VEGFR1 (fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (Flt1)) antagonist, an anti-Flt1 peptide, and a thermally responsive elastin-based polypeptide (EBP) were rationally designed at the genetic level, biosynthesized, and purified by inverse transition cycling to develop potential anti-angiogenic fusion polypeptides to treat neovascular diseases. A series of hydrophilic EBPs with different block lengths were fused with an anti-Flt1 peptide, forming anti-Flt1-EBPs, and the effect of EBP block length on their physicochemical properties was examined. While the anti-Flt1 peptide decreased phase-transition temperatures of anti-Flt1-EBPs, compared with EBP blocks, anti-Flt1-EBPs were soluble under physiological conditions. The anti-Flt1-EBPs dose dependently inhibited the binding of VEGFR1 against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) as well as tube-like network formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells under VEGF-triggered angiogenesis in vitro because of the specific binding between anti-Flt1-EBPs and VEGFR1. Furthermore, the anti-Flt1-EBPs suppressed laser-induced choroidal neovascularization in a wet age-related macular degeneration mouse model in vivo. Our results indicate that anti-Flt1-EBPs as VEGFR1-targeting fusion polypeptides have great potential for efficacious anti-angiogenesis to treat retinal-, corneal-, and choroidal neovascularization.

RESUMO

In this work, we present a multi-mode resonator based on SU-8 polymer and experimentally verify that the resonator showed mode discrimination can be used as a sensor with high performance. According to field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images, the fabricated resonator shows sidewall roughness which is canonically considered to be undesirable after a typical development process. In order to analyze the effect of sidewall roughness, we conduct the resonator simulation considering the roughness under various conditions. Mode discrimination still occurs even in the presence of sidewall roughness. In addition, waveguide width controllable by UV exposure time effectively contributes to mode discrimination. To verify the resonator as a sensor, we perform a temperature variation experiment, which results in a high sensitivity of about 630.8 nm/RIU. This result shows that the multi-mode resonator sensor fabricated via a simple process is competitive with other single-mode waveguide sensors.

RESUMO

We have developed chelator-free copper-64-incorporated iron oxide (IO) nanoparticle (NPs) which have both magnetic and radioactive properties being applied to positron emission tomography (PET)-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We have found that the IO nanoparticles composed of radioactive isotope 64Cu may act as a contrast agent being a diagnostic tool for PET as well as a good T2 MRI nanoprobe due to their good r2/r1 ratio. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the 64Cu incorporation at the core of core-shell-structured IO NPs exhibits a good in vivo stability, giving us an insightful strategy for the design of a contrast agent for the PET-MRI system.

RESUMO

Conventionally, macro-textured surfaces comprising several hundred micrometer-sized patterns are used to minimize silicone-based breast implant complications, including capsular contracture. However, because of the recent cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma from macro-textured implants, there is a strong demand for nano- or micro-textured silicone implants with dimensions smaller than sub-micrometers. Herein, we propose a simple and cost-effective topographical surface modification strategy for silicone-based implants. Several hundred nanometer to sub-micrometer wide groove-type micro-textures were fabricated on a polydimethylsiloxane surface using electrospun polyvinylpyrrolidone fibers as a sacrificial template. The aligned and randomly oriented micro-textures were prepared by controlling the electrospun fiber orientation. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the micro-textured polydimethylsiloxane was cytocompatible and suppressed differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts. Importantly, the aligned micro-texture promoted the polarization of macrophages into the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. Long-term in vivo studies established that the micro-textures potently suppressed various factors affecting foreign body reactions by downregulating profibrotic cytokine gene expression and reducing the fibroblast and myofibroblast counts, the cells playing important roles in the immune response. Thus, the thickness and collagen density of fibrous capsules were decreased, demonstrating that the micro-textured surface effectively inhibited capsular contracture. Although the aligned micro-textures contributed to the polarization of macrophages to the M2 phenotype both in vitro and in vivo, foreign body reaction by both the aligned and randomly oriented micro-textures are similar.

RESUMO

The relaxation behavior in the topological insulator (TI) Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 has been investigated using 125Te nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We systematically investigate the spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T 1) in bulk electronic states with varying particle sizes. By analyzing the 1/T 1 relaxation behavior, we find that with decreasing particle sizes the electronic states in the bulk exhibit more topological insulating behavior, indicative of an increasing energy gap supported by higher thermal activation energy. Besides, the decreasing density of states at the Fermi level was observed in the massive Dirac electrons with decreasing particle size by analyzing the spin-lattice relaxation according to a theoretical model in this spin-orbit coupled system.

RESUMO

A variety of block copolypeptides with stimuli responsiveness have been of growing interest for dynamic self-assembly. Here, multistimuli-responsive triblock copolypeptides composed of thermosensitive elastin-based polypeptides (EBP) and ligand-responsive calmodulin (CalM) were genetically engineered, over-expressed, and nonchromatographically purified by inverse transition cycling. Diluted EBP-CalM-EBP (ECE) triblock copolypeptides under physiological conditions self-assembled into vesicles at the nanoscale by temperature-triggered aggregation of the EBP block with lower critical solution temperature behaviors. Furthermore, concentrated ECE triblock copolypeptides under identical conditions exhibited thermally induced gelation, resulting in physically crosslinked hydrogels. They showed controlled rheological and mechanical properties depending on the conformational change of the CalM middle block induced by binding either Ca2+ or Ca2+ and trifluoperazines (TFPs) as ligands. In addition, both Ca2+-free and Ca2+-bound ECE triblock copolypeptide hydrogels exhibited biocompatibility, while those bound to both Ca2+ and TFPs showed severe cytotoxicity because of controlled TFP release of the CalM blocks. The ECE triblock hydrogels with stimuli responsiveness would be useful as injectable drug delivery depots for biomedical applications.

RESUMO

Nanocomposites integrate functional nanofillers into viscoelastic matrices for electronics, lightweight structural materials, and tissue engineering. Herein, the effect of methacrylate-functionalized (MA-SiO2) and vinyl-functionalized (V-SiO2) silica nanoparticles on the thermal, mechanical, physical, and morphological characteristics of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) nanocomposites was investigated. The gel fraction of V-SiO2 composites decreases upon addition of 3.8 wt% but increases with further addition (>7.4 wt%) until it reaches a plateau at 10.7 wt%. The MA-SiO2 induced no significant changes in gel fraction and both V-SiO2 and MA-SiO2 nanoparticles had a negligible impact on the nanocomposite glass transition temperature and water absorption. The Young's modulus and ultimate compressive stress increased with increasing nanoparticle concentration for both nanoparticles. Due to the higher crosslink density, MA-SiO2 composites reached a maximum mechanical stress at a concentration of 7.4 wt%, while V-SiO2 composites reached a maximum at a concentration of 10.7 wt%. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering revealed a bimodal size distribution for V-SiO2 and a monomodal size distribution for MA-SiO2. Although aggregates were observed for both nanoparticle surface treatments, V-SiO2 dispersion was poor while MA-SiO2 were generally well-dispersed. These findings lay the framework for silica nanofillers in PEG-based nanocomposites for advanced manufacturing applications.

RESUMO

We investigate the magnetic properties in carbonyl iron (CI) particles before and after Ni[Formula: see text] and H[Formula: see text] ion beam irradiation. Upon increasing temperatures, the saturation magnetization ([Formula: see text]) in hysteresis loops exhibits an anomalous increase at a high temperature for the unirradiated and the Ni[Formula: see text]-beam-irradiated samples, unlike in H[Formula: see text]-beam-irradiated sample. Moreover, the magnetization values at low and high temperatures are more intense after Ni[Formula: see text] beam irradiation, whereas after H[Formula: see text] beam irradiation those are remarkably suppressed. Hematite ([Formula: see text]-Fe[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text]) phase introduced on the surface of our CI particles undergoes the Morin transition that was observed in our magnetization-temperature curves. The Morin transition causing canted antiferromagnetism above the Morin temperature was found in the unirradiated and Ni[Formula: see text]-beam-irradiated samples, but not in H[Formula: see text]-beam-irradiated sample. It is thus revealed that the CI particles undergoing the Morin transition cause the anomalous increase in [Formula: see text]. We may suggest that Ni[Formula: see text] ion beam increases uncompensated surface spins on the CI particles resulting in a more steep Morin transition and the intensified [Formula: see text]. Ion-beam irradiation may thus be a good tool for controlling the magnetic properties of CI particles, tailoring our work for future applications.

RESUMO

This study investigated the combined effects of proton irradiation and surface pre-treatment on the current characteristics of Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based metal-insulator-semiconductor high-electron-mobility-transistors (MIS-HEMTs) to evaluate the radiation hardness involved with the Silicon Nitride (SiN) passivation/GaN cap interface. The impact of proton irradiation on the static and dynamic current characteristics of devices with and without pre-treatment were analyzed with 5 MeV proton irradiation. In terms of transfer characteristics before and after the proton irradiation, the drain current of the devices without and with pre-treatment were reduced by an increase in sheet and contact resistances after the proton irradiation. In contrast with the static current characteristics, the gate-lag characteristics of the device with pre-treatment were significantly degenerated. In the device with pre-treatment, the hydrogen passivation for surface states of the GaN cap was formed by the pre-treatment and SiN deposition processes. Since the hydrogen passivation was removed by the proton irradiation, the newly created vacancies resulted in the degeneration of gate-lag characteristics. After nine months in an ambient atmosphere, the gate-lag characteristics of the device with pre-treatment were recovered because of the hydrogen recombination. These results demonstrated that the radiation hardness of MIS-HEMTs was affected by the SiN/GaN interface quality.

RESUMO

A series of segmented ammonium ionenes with varying weight fractions of 2000 g mol-1 poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) or poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO) soft segments were synthesized, and a simplified coarse-grained model of these materials was implemented using molecular dynamics simulations. In addition to varying soft segment type (PTMO vs. PEG), charge density and soft segment content were varied to create a comprehensive series of segmented ammonium ionenes; thermogravimetric analysis reveals that all segmented ionenes in the series are thermally stable up to 240 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) show the formation of phase separated microdomains at low soft segment content. In particular, DSC shows that the hard and soft domains have distinct glass transition temperatures. Similarly, simulations show that reduced soft segment content induces stronger microphase separation, reduces soft segment mobility, and increases ionic aggregate connectivity and size. These increased ionic associations result in elastomeric behavior, as evidenced by the higher rubbery plateau moduli observed at lower soft segment contents through DMA. Moreover, simulations show that ionic aggregation increases when switching from PEG to the less polar PTMO repeat units, which is consistent with DMA results showing higher plateau moduli for PTMO-based ionenes relative to PEG ionenes. DSC and X-ray diffraction determined that the degree of crystallinity increased with soft segment content regardless of segment type. Overall, these results suggest a semi-crystalline microphase-separated morphology strongly influenced by charge density, the degree of ionic aggregation, and the resulting level of confinement and mobility of the soft segments.

RESUMO

Self-assembly of thermally responsive polypeptides into unique nanostructures offers intriguing attributes including dynamic physical dimensions, biocompatibility, and biodegradability for the smart bio-nanomaterials. As elastin-based polypeptide (EBP) fusion proteins with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) are studied as drug delivery systems, EBP block copolypeptides with the resilin-based polypeptide (RBP) displaying an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) have been of great interest. In this study, we report thermally triggered, dynamic self-assembly of EBP- and RBP-based diblock copolypeptides into switched nanostructures with reversibility under physiological conditions. Molecular DNA clones encoding for the EBP-RBP diblocks at different block length ratios were biosynthesized via recursive directional ligation and overexpressed, followed by nonchromatographic purification by inverse transition cycling. Genetically engineered diblock copolypeptides composed of the EBP with an LCST and the RBP with a UCST showed converse phase transition behaviors with both a distinct LCST and a distinct UCST (LCST < UCST). As temperature increased, three phases of these EBP-RBP diblocks were observed: (1) self-assembled micelles or vesicles below both LCST and UCST, (2) whole aggregates above LCST and below UCST, and (3) reversed micelles above both LCST and UCST. In conclusion, these stimuli-triggered, dynamic protein-based nanostructures are promising for advanced drug delivery systems, regenerative medicine, and biomedical nanotechnology.

RESUMO

In this work, Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based p-i-n diodes were designed using a computer aided design (TCAD) simulator for realizing a betavoltaic (BV) cell with a high output power density (Pout). The short-circuit current density (JSC) and open-circuit voltage (VOC) of the 17 keV electron-beam (e-beam)-irradiated diode were evaluated with the variations of design parameters, such as the height and doping concentration of the intrinsic GaN region (Hi-GaN and Di-GaN), which influenced the depletion width in the i-GaN region. A high Hi-GaN and a low Di-GaN improved the Pout because of the enhancement of absorption and conversion efficiency. The device with the Hi-GaN of 700 nm and Di-GaN of 1 × 1016 cm-3 exhibited the highest Pout. In addition, the effects of native defects in the GaN material on the performances were investigated. While the reverse current characteristics were mainly unaffected by donor-like trap states like N vacancies, the Ga vacancies-induced acceptor-like traps significantly decreased the JSC and VOC due to an increase in recombination rate. As a result, the device with a high acceptor-like trap density dramatically degenerated the Pout. Therefore, growth of the high quality i-GaN with low acceptor-like traps is important for an enhanced Pout in BV cell.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effects of searing process before sous-vide (SV) treatment on quality traits, visual attributes, palatability, and storage stability of SV cooked pork patties. Patties were seared on each side by pan-frying for 0 (control), 30 (S30), 60 (S60), 90 (S90), or 120 (S120) s in a stainless-steel pan, and all patties were then vacuum-packed and cooked under thermally controlled conditions at 75 °C for 2 h. Marked differences were observed in quality properties between the control and searing groups, and the S120 group exhibited greater brown surface color and cooking loss compared to the other groups (p < 0.001) due to the additional heating process. Patties from the S60 group showed greater appearance and tenderness acceptability scores compared to patties from the S30 and S120 groups (p < 0.001). On another note, the effects of searing on storage stability were somewhat limited, as they were measured by 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substance, volatile basic nitrogen, total aerobic bacterial count, and coliforms during 49 d of cold storage. Therefore, searing process before SV treatment can improve the visual attributes and palatability of cooked pork patties, and the optimum searing condition was for 60 s, without impairing the storage stability.

RESUMO

Understanding of lithium polysulfide (Li-PS) formation and the shuttle phenomenon is essential for practical application of the lithium/sulfur (Li/S) cell, which has superior theoretical specific energy (2600 Wh/kg). However, it suffers from the lack of direct observation on behaviors of soluble Li-PS in liquid electrolytes. Using in situ graphene liquid cell electron microscopy, we have visualized formation and diffusion of Li-PS simultaneous with morphological and phase evolutions of sulfur nanoparticles during lithiation. We found that the morphological changes and Li-PS diffusion are retarded by ionic liquid (IL) addition into electrolyte. Chronoamperometric shuttle current measurement confirms that IL addition lowers the experimental diffusion coefficient of Li-PS by 2 orders of magnitude relative to that in IL-free electrolyte and thus suppresses the Li-PS shuttle current, which accounts for better cyclability and Coulombic efficiency of the Li/S cell. This study provides significant insights into electrolyte design to inhibit the polysulfide shuttle phenomenon.
